About Count

COUNT was established 24 years ago. Our focus is to develop and implement support programmes and materials that help to improve the standard of numeracy and mathematics teaching in the primary years. Our approach is informed both by curriculum policy and practices of the DoE, by current international trends in mathematics education and by our extensive experience in the field.

The nature of our programmes varies. While some are provincially driven, in co-operation with a number of other service providers, smaller, more localized interventions are tailor made for funders’ requirements in line with priorities established by a particular school district.

In the last 24 years we COUNT has provided workshops and school-based mentoring and support to hundreds of educators. In this time we have developed support materials to accompany our programmes and also formed commercial partnerships with at least three established publishers. In recent years we have seconded senior staff to work with the National Department of Basic Education, providing writers and reviewers of materials for the Foundations For Learning Campaign, for the development of the Grade 3 DBE Rainbow Workbook and developed and evaluated Grade 3 and 6 test items for national systemic and provincial tests.

In addition to our school-based programmes COUNT runs the Family Maths Programme We train teachers and youth in communities to run workshops for parents/caregivers and their children in a collaborative environment where together they explore mathematical games, puzzles and challenges that promote a passion for and interest in mathematics beyond the confines of school based teaching and learning.
